Acorns in Greece

Drawn in Greece October 2019

In October 2019, I had an incredible opportunity (thanks to Draw Botanical) to visit Greece. I had such an epic time there. I thought I would come home with some epic travel journal. That never panned out—work-traveling gets so tiring! It was hard to make time to internalize the experience. This made me all the more thankful that I was there as an instructor for a botanical drawing retreat. This meant there were plenty of hours set aside in the schedule for this type of drawing. So, my trip has a few artifacts: some botanicals of interesting plants and way too many phone-photographs.

This particular piece is one of my favorites, because I think it has the “energy” of a travel journal disguised as a botanical drawing. As I walked the streets of the historic town nearby, I noticed several types of acorns. Like so many different kinds! I was amazed by how many I saw, and then made it a point to collect acorns in some of the other towns we traveled to. By the end, I had this nice illustrated memory of that feeling of comparing all the parts of the acorn to see if it was like any of the others.
